Char Dham Yatra from Gujarat: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath

The Char Dham Yatra covers four sacred Himalayan shrines — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath — and is one of the most-booked pilgrimage trips for Gujarati families every summer.

Destination

Every summer, thousands of families from Surat, Ahmedabad, Vadodara and across Gujarat undertake the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand — a circuit of four of Hinduism's most sacred shrines: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Most pilgrims complete the full circuit in 9 to 12 days between May and October, and while it is deeply moving, the altitude, crowds and mandatory registration mean it rewards planning done properly.

The four shrines and the traditional route

Yamunotri, the source of the Yamuna, is reached by a trek or pony/palanquin ride from Janki Chatti, while Gangotri, source of the Ganga, is more accessible by road with a shorter walk to the temple. Kedarnath is a Jyotirlinga shrine sitting at over 3,500 metres, reached by a demanding trek or a helicopter option from Guptkashi or Phata, and Badrinath, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is the most accessible of the four with a motorable road right up to the temple town. Most pilgrims follow the traditional sequence — Yamunotri, then Gangotri, then Kedarnath, then Badrinath — travelling by road from Haridwar or Rishikesh, which serve as the base for the whole circuit.

Registration is mandatory, and worth doing early

The Uttarakhand government requires every Char Dham pilgrim to register online before the Yatra, with biometric registration also required at designated points en route. This is strictly enforced, both to manage pilgrim flow safely and for identification in high-altitude terrain, and we handle the registration as part of your booking, well before your travel dates.

The Kedarnath helicopter option

Kedarnath is the most physically demanding of the four shrines — around 16 to 18 km of trekking each way from Gaurikund, at altitude. A helicopter service operates from Guptkashi, Phata and Sersi, cutting the journey to a short flight for anyone unable to trek, which matters particularly for elderly pilgrims or families travelling with parents. Seats sell out fast in peak season, so we book these well in advance.

Best time to go, and what to pack

The season runs roughly May to October or November, opening after the shrines' winter closure and closing again around Diwali. May–June and September–October are the most comfortable weather windows, avoiding both early-season snow and the landslide-prone July–August monsoon. Pack warm layers even in summer, since high-altitude mornings and evenings turn cold, along with comfortable broken-in walking shoes, a basic medical kit with any regular medication and a spare supply, and rain gear if you are travelling in the monsoon shoulder months — a pre-travel health check is worth doing too, especially if you are over 60 or manage a cardiac or respiratory condition.
