The Maldives has a reputation as a pure-luxury honeymoon destination — and it can be. But there are actually two very different ways to visit, and the smarter you plan, the more island paradise you get for your budget.

The two ways to do the Maldives
Option one is the classic private-resort island — one resort per island, overwater villas, all-inclusive dining and total seclusion. Option two is a local island like Maafushi, where guesthouses, public beaches and cheaper excursions make the Maldives genuinely affordable. Many couples combine both.
The luxury way: overwater villas
A private-island resort is the honeymoon fantasy — glass floors over the reef, a house reef to snorkel straight off your deck, sunset dolphin cruises and candle-lit sandbank dinners. All-inclusive plans keep costs predictable once you are there.

The budget way: local islands
On inhabited islands like Maafushi or Thulusdhoo you stay in comfortable guesthouses, eat local, and pay a fraction of resort prices — then book the same snorkelling, sandbank and dolphin trips as an add-on. A “bikini beach” keeps things easy for tourists.
Getting around: seaplane vs speedboat
Resorts are reached by speedboat (near Malé, cheaper) or seaplane (farther, pricier, but a jaw-dropping ride). Local islands are usually a public ferry or speedboat. Your transfer type is a big cost lever — we match the resort to a transfer that fits your budget.

Best time & what it costs
November to April is the dry, sunny season (peak Dec–Jan). A 4-night overwater-villa honeymoon starts around ₹1,10,000–₹1,80,000 per person with flights; a local-island escape can be done from about ₹55,000. Either way, book early — the best villas sell out months ahead.
