Ask a Gujarat traveller about their dream trip and they will name Dubai or Bali before they name the Rann of Kutch, and that is a shame, because the White Rann is a genuinely unique landscape — a vast, flat, blindingly white salt desert that stretches to the horizon and turns silver under a full moon, best visited during the Rann Utsav festival season from November to February.
What makes the White Rann special
Near the village of Dhordo, about 85 km from Bhuj, the salt desert opens into a completely flat white expanse that runs to the horizon in every direction. By day it is stark and photogenic; on a full-moon night, lit only by moonlight, it becomes something genuinely otherworldly — silent, silver and enormous.
Rann Utsav — the festival that makes it easy
Every winter, the Gujarat Tourism board runs Rann Utsav, a purpose-built tent city at the edge of the Rann with cultural performances, local Kutchi cuisine, camel and jeep safaris, and handicraft stalls from the region's renowned artisans. It transforms a remote destination into a comfortable, well-organised holiday, typically running from around November through to February.

What to do and where to stay
Walk out onto the White Rann at sunset and again after moonrise — the two are completely different experiences — take a camel cart or jeep safari across the salt flats, visit the Kutchi villages around Bhuj for embroidery, bandhani tie-dye and mirror-work handicrafts, climb Kalo Dungar (Black Hill) for the highest viewpoint over the Rann, explore Bhuj town's Aina Mahal palace and old-city craft markets, and catch the evening cultural performances of Kutchi folk music and dance at the tent city. The Rann Utsav tent city offers Swiss tents ranging from simple to luxury, all with attached bathrooms and meals included, while Bhuj town also has hotels for travellers who prefer a fixed base and day trips out.
Best time to visit and getting there
November to February is both the festival season and the only comfortable weather window, since summers in Kutch are extremely hot and the Rann itself floods with the monsoon and is inaccessible outside the dry winter months — time your visit around a full moon date for the classic Rann Utsav experience. From Ahmedabad it is roughly 400 km or seven hours by road, or a short flight to Bhuj; from Surat, fly to Bhuj via Mumbai or Ahmedabad then travel by road to Dhordo, about 85 km; from Rajkot it is roughly 250 km or five hours by road; and the final Bhuj-to-Dhordo/Rann Utsav leg is about 85 km by road, arranged as a transfer. We book the tent city and arrange transfers from Bhuj as part of the package.
