Most tourist-visa rejections for Indian applicants have nothing to do with the destination — they come down to a weak or inconsistent document file. Get these right and approval becomes routine. Here is the checklist we use at Explera's Surat visa desk, and the specific mistakes that sink applications.

The core documents (almost every country)

A passport valid 6+ months with two blank pages; recent photos in the exact size and background the country specifies; the application form; confirmed flight and hotel bookings (or an itinerary); and travel insurance (mandatory for Schengen, wise everywhere).

The financials — where visas are won

This is the heart of the file: 6 months of bank statements showing a healthy, steady balance (not a large deposit that appeared last week), the last 2–3 years' ITR, and salary slips or, for business owners, GST returns and company papers. Consulates are checking one thing — that you can fund the trip and have reasons to return home.

Proof of ties to India

The consulate wants evidence you'll come back: an employer NOC and leave letter (or business registration for owners), property papers, and family ties. Students add a bonafide letter; retirees add pension proof. Strong ties are the quiet reason easy-going profiles get approved and shaky ones don't.

The cover letter

A short, honest letter stating who you are, your trip dates and plan, who is funding it, and your commitment to return. It ties the whole file together and pre-empts the officer's questions. A clear cover letter has rescued many borderline applications.

The five mistakes that cause rejections

One: a sudden large deposit before applying (reads as "borrowed for the visa"). Two: photos in the wrong size or background. Three: dates that don't match across flights, hotels and the form. Four: a thin or missing financial history. Five: applying too late for the appointment. Every one of these is avoidable.
